January is National Radon Action Month. Radon is the leading environmental cause of cancer deaths in the United States and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

Radon is an odorless, colorless and tasteless radioactive gas that occurs naturally in Minnesota soils. It can enter into all kinds of homes through cracks or openings in walls or foundations.

The only way for residents to know if their home has radon is to test. Testing is easy, inexpensive and only takes 3-7days.

Winona County Environmental Services, located at 225 W. 2nd Street in Winona, has short term test kits available for $5.00. Open hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (excluding holidays) For questions call the Winona County Environmental Services office at 507-457-6520.
