(KWNO) The Winona City Council voted 6-1 to not open the Aquatic Center this year during their Monday night meeting.
Council members acted on the recommendation of Parks and Recreation Director Chad Ubl. Ubl and City Manager Steve Sarvi cited equity concerns that would arise with capacity limits imposed by state health guidelines.
Council members and city staff also shared safety concerns of keeping common areas disinfected and patrons maintaing social distancing.
“Simply because we are a government entity and that means we’re picking who gets to win and lose. I don’t think there’s a good way to do that,” said Councilwoman Michelle Alexander, who introduced the motion to close the pool.
Councilman Paul Schollmeier was the lone dissenting vote.
“When we are up against the wall, now is the time to come up with a breakthrough,” said Schollmeier.
