(KWNO) Officials from the City of Winona are advising residents of above normal levels of radium 226 and radium 228 in the city’s water supply.
Officials say the elevated levels are not an emergency. Routine testing at the Johnson Treatment Plant revealed elevated levels.
"Radium 226 and radium 228 occur naturally within the groundwater. Some people who drink water containing radium in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer," city officials wrote in a release.
Residents do not need to seek alternative forms of water at this time, according to a notice from the city. Officials recommend residents with health concerns to consult their doctor.
