(KWNO) State health officials are warning residents of a contact tracing scam.

The Minnesota Department of Health’s Kris Ehresmann says scammers will pose as a contact tracer then ask their target for credit card information to pay for a COVID-19 test that will never be sent.

Ehresmann says tracers will never ask for money.

“Winona County contract tracers always leave a call back number and identify themselves as contact tracers whereas scammers typically do not leave a call back number,” said Winona County Health and Human Services Public Health Supervisor Melanie Tatje.

You can also verify a contact tracer by calling the county health department at 507-457-6500.
