(KWNO) With the upcoming Independence Day holiday, wildlife officials are reminding area residents that fireworks are prohibited on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.

Refuge personnel say the bright lights and noise disturb animals that call the refuge home, which can cause them to flee to unfamiliar and sometimes urban environments. Animals can also choke on litter left behind from fireworks.

The Refuge includes most islands and beaches on the Mississippi River from Wabasha, MN to Rock Island, IL.
