(KWNO) House DFL lawmakers rolled out a bill that would spend $440 million of the state’s $1.3 billion budget surplus on education.
The "Great Start for All Minnesota Children Act” calls on spending $190 million on early learning scholarships, $190 million for childcare assistance and $60 million for voluntary pre-kindergarten.
House speaker Mellissa Hortman says the legislation aims to close the opportunity gap for Minnesota children, saying Minnesota has one of the worst opportunity gaps in the nation. The bill doesn't have Republican co-authors.
