Genevieve C. Bartz
Genevieve C. Bartz, 89 of Winona, passed away peacefully of congestive heart failure on May 1, 2020, at Lake Winona Manor, Winona, MN.
Genevieve Cordelia Sheely was born June 9, 1930 in Blue Earth, MN, to Elbert and Lavina (Moss) Sheely. She graduated from Huntley High School in 1948. On August 23, 1958, she married her longtime love and best friend, Raymond A. Bartz, SR who preceded her in death in 1985. Together they had 4 children.
Genevieve was a people person. She seldom sat still. In her younger days she was actively involved and served as a leader with the Girl Scouts, involved with PTA and ran the local TOPS group. She was a member of Mckinley and then Homer United Methodist Church, serving in several different positions. She was Past President in both the Eagles Auxiliary and her AFL-CIO union local. She and Ray hosted BBQs for some of the students of St. Mary’s University. Later years she was involved with a Widowed Persons Group, the Red Hat Society and the Winona Old Settlers, as well as other activities and organizations. She loved doing flower arrangements, with her gardens filled with Roses, Gladiolas and Baby’s Breath. She enjoyed sewing for friends and family, including making a special wedding gown for a friend. She loved camping and watching the animals, especially birds with Cardinals being her favorite. But the thing she enjoyed the most was family and spending as much time with them as possible. She would show up for spur of the moment picnics and outings and often traveled to Utah to see her grandchildren.
She began and ended her career in Health Care. Her first job was with the State Hospital in Rochester and She last worked for Winona County doing in home health care. In between she was employed at Whiting’s Flowers (Rochester), Kresge’s five and dime store, Merf’s (Ellinghysen) Local Grocery Store and St Mary’s University (where she was for 19 years). After she retired from Winona County at the age of 70, Gen continued working parttime as a self-employed home health aide until she was 83.
She is survived by her children: Michael (Connie) Sheely, Rochester, MN; Betty (Richard) Rusert, Minnesota City, MN; and Katherine (Don Schroeder) Bartz, Dodge Center, MN.; 12 grandchildren: Theresa, Jason (Mandy), Dillon, Danica (Tim), Nicholas, Ryan, Christopher (Jessica), Cynthia (Christopher), Nathan (Megan), Helen (Tedd), Amy (Matthew) and Hannah (Isaac); 25 great grandchildren: Emerald Thompson-Jereczek, Ean Jerezcek, Morgan (Makaela) Rusert, Tristan Rusert, Zander Rusert, Keegan Rusert, Raeanne Bossert, Riley Bossert, Reese Bossert, Lillian Bera, Jacob Bera, Tyler Bruns, Tijen Bera, Harrison Rix, Alexa McFarlin, Trent Martin, William Martin, Lori Martin, Kenzo Wada, Keiko Wada, Emma Bartz, Adeline Bartz, Theo Hikes, Elaine Olson and Theodore Olson; siblings: Darold (Mary Jo) Sheely, Elkton, MN; Robert Sheely, Rose Creek, MN; Darlene Ulwelling, Austin, MN; sister-in-law Doris Sheely and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; infant son, William; Brothers John, Harold, sister Elvira Ellenbaum, brother-in-law Earl Ellebaum and sister-in-law Elsie Sheely.
Due to the current limitation of gatherings, a private family service was held and interment was at Oakland Cemetery, Minnesota City, MN.
There will be a memorial service and gathering at a future date after the restrictions have been lifted.
