(KWNO) Winona State football, soccer and volleyball will have shorter seasons this fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Warrior football will have their traditional 11-game season cut to 10 games. Their season is slated to open on Sept. 12 at MSU-Moorhead, followed by their home-opener against Minnesota-Duluth on Sept. 19. The Warriors will not cross paths with MSU-Mankato in 2020.
The volleyball season has been reduced to 20 matches and will not feature out-of-conference opponents. The Warriors will begin their season by hosting Northern State University and Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Sept. 18 and Sept. 20, respectively.
Soccer will also stay in conference with their schedule trimmed to 14 games. WSU will kick off their season at home against the University of Sioux Falls.
"The schedule changes reflect the recent NCAA Division II Presidents Council announced earlier this spring which reduces the maximum number of contests and dates of competition for the 2020-21 academic year in an effort to limit the financial impacts of COVID-19," the Warrior Athletic Department wrote in a statement.
