High Water Slows River Shipping

Commercial shipping can be added to the list of victims from high water levels on the Mississippi River.

Lucy McMartin, Director of Community Development with the Winona Port Authority, says only six barges have passed through Winona’s port since the season opener. In 2018, over 300 barges had passed through by the end of May.

Water levels in the Winona are returning to normal but flooding in the southern US has further delayed commercial shipping. Reports indicated that water levels to the south will return to normal by June 20.

Once the river reopens, McMartin expects long lines of trucks at the terminal and heavy truck traffic on Riverview Drive.
