The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) in Winona, MN, will open two new exhibitions in January featuring Twin Cities ceramicist Anna Metcalfe and Slovakian photographer Maria Svarbova.
Upstream, running January 11 through May 5, 2019, features works by artist Anna Metcalfe that focuses on her decade-long investigation of the waters of the Upper Midwest. With a background in clay, Metcalfe’s work investigates relationship to landscape and water through community storytelling and personal narrative. Works in the exhibition will include ceramic installation and community-engaged projects that reflect the artist’s abiding connection with water. This exhibition is made possible with the generous support of exhibition sponsor Wenonah Canoe and media sponsor Wisconsin Public Radio.
On display January 25 through April 28, 2019, is Maria Svarbova: Swimming Pool. Svarbova creates colorful and atmospheric photographs of socialist era swimming pools in her native country of Slovakia. Her style is simultaneously retro and futuristic, and her warm, aqueous palette is pleasing and inviting. Svarbova has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Europe,
and this is the first US museum solo exhibition of this award-winning photographer.
There will be a public opening reception celebrating both exhibitions on Thursday, January 24 from 5:00-7:00 PM with passed hors-d'oeuvres and a cash bar. The opening reception is free for members and students, all others are $10. Anna Metcalfe will give a free Gallery Walk & Talk on Saturday, February 2 from 1:00-2:00 PM.
