The Winona Symphony Orchestra presents its annual Children’s Concert, Tuesday, Feb. 19, with performances at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., in the Harriet Johnson Auditorium, Somsen Hall, Winona State University campus.
The concerts will include W.A. Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and a narrated orchestral score featuring Serge Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. The piece introduces different instruments personifying characters in the story of Peter, his grandfather, the bird, the cat, the duck, the hunters, and the wolf. Area elementary schoolchildren have been invited and 1,100 have confirmed reservations.
Under the direction of Dr. Erik Rohde, the annual Children’s Concert includes 28 musicians and local announcer Ray Felton as the narrator. The Symphony has been awarded a $10,000 Arts and Cultural Heritage grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council for its 2019 Children’s Concert for Winona area 3rd and 4th-grade students.
Thanks to this generous grant and donations from local businesses and individuals, the concerts will be presented to Winona area schoolchildren at no cost to the students or schools.
Reservations for the 9:00 a.m. concert are full; reservations are still being accepted for the 10:30 a.m. performance. Limited balcony seating at the 10:30 a.m. concert is available to the general public.
Free will donations are accepted from the general public.
